Year-RoundBloomington Theatre and Art Center is excited to announce the area premiere of Striking 12, a Bloomington Civic Theatre (BCT) production directed by Christine Weber.
With actors playing musical instruments, Striking 12 is a concert-with-a-story musical event that is sure to become a holiday classic. Striking 12 weaves a modern-day New Year's Eve into Hans Christian Andersen's classic fable "The Little Match Girl." This unique hybrid of musical theater and live concert tells the story of a grumpy, overworked New Yorker whose resolve to spend New Year's Eve alone crumbles when an unexpected visitor brings some much-needed cheer. The show springs to life through an eclectic score of new music with roots in classical, musical theater, jazz and rock. Striking 12 was co-created by GrooveLily (Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda) and Tony Award-winning writer Rachel Sheinkin (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee).
At the heart of Striking 12 is the message to reach past the materialism of the holiday season and the rush of daily life to connect to your neighbors and build your community. BCT decided to fulfill this message by creating a partnership with VEAP (Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People), a local non-profit that believes that helping a neighbor in need will strengthen the community. For over 35 years VEAP has been utilizing a mix of professional and volunteer services to help low-income people meet immediate needs and reach long-term stability. BCT is encouraging patrons to bring in donations to the Bloomington Center for the Arts and providing information materials on volunteering and other VEAP programs. For more information see our website at btacmn.org or visit VEAP’s website at veapvolunteers.org.
