Trumpet virtuoso Ashley Hall is joined by pianist Horacio Nuguid in an impressive program of music for trumpet and piano. The program opens with the Sonata in E-flat Major by the Danish composer Thorvald Hansen. Composed in 1903, Hansen's Sonata was the first serious work for the cornet, which to that point was associated mainly with pieces of a lighter nature. The sonata will be followed by two virtuosic pieces, the Solo de Concours by Théo Charlier and the Grand Russian Fantasia by Jules Levy. The second half of the program will open with the intimate and spiritual sounds of the Légende by George Enescu and Deep River and He Never Said a Mumbalin' Word as arranged by Moses Hogan. The program will conclude with the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Eric Ewazen. This work was composed for the International Trumpet Guild and was premiered with the composer at the piano in 1995.
