    Death and Transfiguration

We continue our homage to Richard Strauss with four works that illuminate his incredible creative range...and our Music Director's! Osmo Vänskä is clarinetist in the Suite for Winds, joined by 12 musicians for this early Strauss work, showing Wagner's influence on the young composer. He returns to the podium to lead the dancing Burleske, featuring magnetic young pianist Andrew Staupe, a favorite here and around the world. The mood darkens in Metamorphosen for strings, viewed as the composer’s lament for the cultural devastation of World War II. Culminating in celestial harp arpeggios, the ethereal tone poem Death and Transfiguration meditates on the life and death of an artist, and is a favorite of Osmo Vänskä.
