  1. Resident Theater Company Performance - Kara Sevda

    514 Chestnut Street
    Virginia, MN 55792
    Call: 218-741-5571

The Lyric Center for the Arts is pleased to host Now What Theatre Company in residence during May and June, 2017. Formed in the summer of 2016, Now What Theatre came together when a handful of students in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s “Masters in Classical and Contemporary Text (Acting)” program decided to take an original play to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

“Kara Sevda” is Turkish for "blind love" or "black passion." It describes a type of attraction that is passionate, almost dangerously so. The kind of love that eats you alive, that destroys you from the inside. Love that makes you blind, that is characterized by intense longing.

Written by Lisa VillaMil, Kara Sevda was debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016. Now What Theatre is currently on an international tour and will be in Virginia, MN from May 20 - June 11.

In Kara Sevda, nuclear winter has descended upon the globe. The last train south out of Paris is boarding. But not everyone will be drawn in the lottery. When Celia and Rhys find themselves awaiting the lottery results on the same bench, they strike up a challenging acquaintance amidst falling bombs and a nameless war, asking the question ‘what kind of world do we live in now...’ and what happens if they don't catch the train at all?

Core artists of NWT include Lisa VillaMil, Tierney Nolan, Kat Hann, Kaija Pellinen and Will Foote. The Core Artist’s create work that is fresh and dynamic, inspired by everything and anything in the artistic, social, political or commonplace world around them. They are constantly on the edge of what excites them, ready to explore whatever it is – be it a political opinion, an abstract concept, particular human interactions, or that thought-provoking question “what if” – or be it a type of performance, like clowning, guerilla theatre, or puppetry. The possibilities are as limitless as the inspirations.
Primarily operating under a touring model, NWT takes its shows to both sides of the Atlantic, covering the UK, Ireland, Canada and the USA. tour this summer as we travel across the United States, Canada, and Scotland! Their 2017 tour sees them in Virginia Minnesota from May 20th through June 11th. Performances will be at the Lyric Annex, 516 Chestnut Street, downtown Virginia.

Performance dates throughout the residency are 7:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, 2:30 on Sundays and a Brown Bag lunchtime performance on Friday, May 26. Tickets may be purchased in advance at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2950675 or at the Lyric Annex, Thursdays – Saturdays 11am – 3pm. Find more information at www.lyriccenteronline.org.
