2013 Governor’s Fishing Opener in Park Rapids Makes Headlines
Release Date: May 15, 2013
The successful Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener hosted by Park Rapids this weekend was one for the books! Presented with nature’s challenges, including ice on many area lakes, the organizers made the most out of it and generated pre-event publicity like no other community has.
Also, Governor Dayton caught his first walleye at the opener event, landing it at 12:25 a.m. on Saturday. The winds blew later on Saturday morning for the official fishing send-off, but it did not deter Governor Dayton and North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple from heading out on the Fish Hook River. This is the first time that two governors have fished together at the Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener.
Fourteen radio stations broadcast live from the event, and a special edition of WCCO-TV’s “Going to the Lake” feature focused on Opener activities and Park Rapids area attractions. A total of 120 media representing 70 media outlets attended the event.
The Park Rapids Lakes Area Chamber provided the community leadership for the event, with the support of more than 400 enthusiastic volunteers. Special thanks to executive director Katie Magozzi and her team for hosting this great event!
