Heart of the Continent Opens Nominations for “Geo-Tourism MapGuide” Website
Release Date: May 06, 2014
A community-based nomination process launched recently will be used to create a National Geographic “Geo-Tourism MapGuide” for the Heart of the Continent region. The Heart of the Continent encompasses part of Koochiching and all of Cook, Lake and St. Louis counties in northeastern Minnesota, and northwestern Ontario border communities from Fort Frances to Thunder Bay.
The website will highlight the world-class natural and cultural attractions of the area. The project seeks to contribute to the economic health of communities by promoting geo-tourism: tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place – its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents.
Local residents and visitors are invited to nominate for inclusion in the MapGuide the landmarks, attractions, activities, events, lodging, local foods and unique shopping that define the region’s character and distinctive appeal. The MapGuide will be available late fall or early winter 2014.
Nominations for this initial phase of the project can be made through June 15 at www.traveltheheart.org. For more information, or to request a community presentation about the project, contact Mary Somnis at email@example.com.
