Jonny's Favorite Sporting Events (and fans) in MN

  • Pro Sports - Twin Cities

One of the few places in the free world to serves-up a FULL menu of pro teams--Baseball (Twins), Football (Vikings), Basketball (Timberwolves & Lynx) and Hockey (Wild). Feast until it hurts!

  • Brainerd International Raceway - Brainerd

For those who like their sports loud and proud. BIR hosts a healthy dose of drag and road racing. The biggest event on the BIR calendar is the NHRA Nationals in mid-August, featuring the biggest names in drag racing. There's lots of lodging options from condo rentals to family oriented camping. If racing is your thing, this is one sweet place.

  • St. Paul Saints - St. Paul

There's a hot tub in left field. People getting hair cuts in the stands. A pig running around on the field. And if that's not enough, there's a minor league baseball game going on. In all seriousness, this is baseball the way it oughta be...a team playing their guts out and lots of family fun. If you don't have a good time here, seek professional help immediately.

  • Townball - Various Locations

If Abner Doubleday was still kick'en, he would certainly smile proudly on the rural amateur baseball league known as "Minnesota Townball." This is baseball passion that goes down smooth. Plant your rear-end on the grass next to your friends and family, and take in an amazing sight--baseball players playing purely for the joy of the game. You can catch games around the state. (The pics are of my home team, the Jordan Brewers. Go Brewers!!!!!!)

  • State High School Hockey Tourament - St. Paul

Every March, over 100,000 people pass through the doors of the Xcel Energy Center to watch high school talent take to the ice and settle the big question: "Who Is King of the Minnesota Rink?"

  • Snowmobile Grass Drag Races (Hay Days) - Forest Lake

Hay Days is the largest snowmobile event on the planet Earth. Leave it to Minnesotan sport fans to turn a winter sport into a summer one. Here you'll find a NASCAR-like energy running through the crowd, with plenty of wide-eyed kids rooting for there favorite racers.

  • USA Soccer Cup - Blaine

The greatest international youth soccer tournament in North America is right here in Minnesota...1,000 teams from 22 different countries.

  • US Pond Hockey Championships - Minneapolis

Before mega-hockey sporting arenas, there was a place called the great outdoors, where the Zamboni was anybody who could work a shovel. Here at the US Pond Hockey Championship, daring participate brave the elements and competitors for this 3 day tournament. Played on a Minneapolis lake in Minneapolis, teams jockey to have their names engraved on the highly cherished trophy know as the Golden Shovel.

  • Rodeo - Sherburne (& other locations)

One sport that the participants are crazier than the fans. That goes double for the bull riders, or as I like to call them, "blue jean clad projectiles". There are lots of rodeo opportunities around the state, ranging from serious no frills stuff to more of a festival-like events. If you want to rub elbows with riders, check out the one in Sherburne.

  • Minnesota Roller Girls - St. Paul

Old School Roller Derby + Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome + The Rocky Horror Picture Show = Minnesota Roller Girls. This is one you gotta see to believe.

  • National Volleyball Center - Rochester

Watch a good spirited V-ball game and "borrow" some moves for your next spike-fest of a game.

  • John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon - Duluth

Put on your long underwear, pack a thermos of hot chocolate and enjoy a Jack-London-like- experience. Outside Alaska, this is the Indy 500 of dog sled races. (Or if I'm spewing the right metaphor, I'd say the "Indy 400", since the race covers nearly 400 miles of rugged terrain.) Over 4,000 fans will be cheering on both dogs and mushers. Worth its weight in "I did that" stories.
