Leech Lake is one of the largest lakes in MN. It offers an extensive variety of fishing, and is home to species of record largemouth bass, trophy muskie, perch, crappie, northern pike, and of course walleye.
- Doug Schultz of the Minn Dept. of Natural Resources says, “That without a doubt, Leech Lake was the hottest walleye destination in 2008."
- Al Mass, a renowned fishing guide that has been guiding on Leech Lake for more than 40 years, says, “Last year was one of the best he has ever seen, and predicts that it will be the destination of choice for walleye fishing again in 2009. Last year there were reports of people catching 50 to 75 walleye per day. “ Al said, “The bite here is as good as anywhere in the country, if not better.” Mass added, "Walleye of all sizes were biting, small, mid length, and all the way up to 31 inches. It wasn't uncommon to see several upwards of the 20 inches.”
Contribute this to the stocking of walleye by the DNR, and the control of Cormorants by the Leech Lake Ojibwa reservation for 4 years.
