The Alexandria Lakes area is one of the prime resort spots in the state. Dozens of lakes offer great fishing for walleye, bass, northern pike and panfish. Vacationers also enjoy boating, sailing, waterskiing and windsurfing these waters.
The concentration of lakes here--Cass, Bemidji, the giant Red Lakes, and dozens of others in between these big waters--have long drawn serious anglers. Walleye, northern pike, bass, and perch are the lure. In the pine and birch forests around Bemidji, Cass Lake and Blackduck, dozens of resorts cater to anglers as well as families.
The heart of Minnesota is lake country. The Brainerd Lakes Area, around the communities of Brainerd, Baxter, Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Crosslake, Pine River and Little Falls and is splashed with over 460 lakes.
From small town to big city, there's a wide mix of things to see and do in the Central Lakes area. The commercial hub of central Minnesota is St. Cloud (pop. 48,800), the third largest city in the state outside of the Twin Cities area.
Straddling the Canada border are the expansive waters of Lake of the Woods, with 65,000 miles of shoreline, 14,000 islands and a 55-mile width. These waters boast some of the finest walleye and northern pike fishing in the state. In fact, this area is popular for a variety of outdoor activities: boating, camping, hunting and wildlife watching. Many year-round lodges and resorts cater to outdoor enthusiasts.
Leech Lake and Lake Winnibigoshish (or "Winnie"), some of the most expansive waters in Minnesota, are in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest. The dense woods and sparkling lakes of the forest give the area a near-wilderness character, but those who vacation here will find all the comforts of home.
This is where the mighty Mississippi river begins. It's a place of uncompromising beauty, etched with dense forests and sky-tinted waters. The world's third longest river begins here as a small stream beneath the majestic pine trees of Itasca State Park.
This countryside is a storybook scene of wooded hills and crystal lakes amid a patchwork quilt of farmland and pastures. The peaceful scenery of relatively "undiscovered" Otter Tail Country make it a great spot for a relaxing getaway.
On the eastern edge of the Great Plains, the Red River Valley was once swathed in tall prairie grass as far as the eye could see, and traversed by great herds of buffalo. Today, this rich agricultural region boasts a range of outdoor recreation plus two lively cities on the plains.
