Directions

  • About 90 miles north of Twin Cities, 60 miles south of Duluth via I-35. At Sandstone exit #191, take Hwy 61 west about 2 mi; turn right on Cty 27 then left at 'T' (still 27). Go 3 mi, turn right on Fox Rd (Cty 17), then immediate left into Audubon Dr.

  • Office & trails are open Monday-Friday 8:00am - 4:00pm. Trails also accessible on some Saturdays, but please call first. Adult and youth programs throughout the year - check our website.

    Tour our grounds/facilities, find out about our renewable energy systems, learn how our center began, visit our birds of prey, and more. Enjoy a variety of exhibits and demos.     The rich biological diversity of Pine County and the surrounding area provide a bonanza of birding opportunities for experienced birders and those just getting started. The Audubon Center of the North Woods is located in a unique transition zone where the eastern deciduous forest meets the northern conifer forest, and where pockets of the western prairie can be found. The terrestrial diversity is matched by the aquatic plethora of rivers, lakes, bogs and marshes. This first-class weekend all-inclusive birding festival gives participants a chance to visit a wide variety of habitats that support myriad bird species.

    With field trips led by seasoned guides, engaging on-site workshops, bird banding sessions, a live raptor presentation, renowned keynote speakers, delicious homemade meals and comfortable accommodations, this all-inclusive festival is birding at its best.     Over 225 bird species have been spotted at the Audubon Center property alone and during this weekend, participants have the possibility to identify many of Minnesota’s Stewardship Birds, as recently identified by Audubon Minnesota. Stewardship birds are defined as bird species where Minnesota contains 5% or more of the bird’s global breeding population.

    11 of the 12 MN Stewardship Bird species are regulars to the area:

    Over the weekend, choose from a variety of expert led on-site workshops on gardening, cooking and food preservation, off-site field trips to local farms and meet farmers who are growing produce and raising animals naturally and organically, and enjoy engaging evening presenters.

    Winter will give way to spring before we know it and then the sap will be flowing in the maple trees. That's maple syrup time at the Audubon Center of the North Woods!

    Come join us for a pancake brunch and hands-on maple syrup program. You will learn which trees in the woods are maple trees, and the history and process of making maple syrup. Then, help us will tap some maple trees, collect and haul sap, and observe the sap being processed in to liquid gold maple syrup.

    Part of our annual "Autumn at the Audubon" open house at the Audubon Center of the North Woods, Sandstone, MN

    Race starts at 9 a.m., awards ceremony is at 10:30 a.m.
    Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage in a gorgeous lakeside refuge. 5K run is over trails on the 535-acre Audubon Center property - 10 K run is part trail and part around Grindstone Lake.

    All proceeds go towards the development and improvement of energy education curriculum at the Audubon Center of the North Woods.

    Registered runners/walkers receive t-shirt (1st 100 registered participants), post-race refreshments. Free camping is available the night before and day of the race – inside lodging is also available; reservations required.

Spend this weekend with your friends or take the opportunity to get away by yourself, meet new people, and learn new skills. Choose from a variety of physical, mental, spiritual, challenge and creative activities. Exciting keynote speakers and fun evenings too!
