    Shapiro & Smith Dance returns for its 31st season with an evening of dance featuring the company’s signature blend of biting wit and breathtaking physicality. The works run the gamut of human emotion as Shapiro & Smith’s company of dancers tell stories of humor and heartbreak; triumph and despair.

    The program will feature a world premiere by artistic director and award-winning choreographer Joanie Smith, as well as a reprisal of 2017’s uproariously funny “A Naked Man’s Shirt.” Back by popular demand, the company will also perform its critically-acclaimed “Bolero” featuring an army of the Twin Cities most powerful female dancers.

    This fall at The Cowles Center, Minnesota Dance Theatre turns its focus to the future. Honoring the company’s longstanding commitment to the cultivation of new dances, MDT Artistic Director Lise Houlton has commissioned three world premieres pairing beloved local artists and innovators with MDT’s exceptionally versatile performers. Drawing from their extensive performing experience with such respected local companies as James Sewell Ballet, TU Dance, and Black Label Movement and from their own distinctive aesthetic exploration, choreographers Penelope Freeh, Darwin Black, and Elayna Waxse will each create a never-before-seen work for an evening that promises to be an electrifying and eclectic celebration of the Twin Cities’ vibrant dance community.

    Twin Cities Ballet of Minnesota (TCB) is excited to announce the World Premiere of its all-new original full-length rock ballet, The Wall, with live music by the band Run Like Hell. This groundbreaking event—a Minnesota first—features an incredible collaboration of local artists­: choreographers, dancers, and musicians, and demonstrates TCB’s artistic vision, innovation, and its dancers’ versatility. Run Like Hell is an amazing and talented tribute band based in St. Paul, which tours multimedia rock shows to the music of Pink Floyd. With TCB interpreting the original Pink Floyd rock opera’s music, themes, story arc, and lyrics through the prism of contemporary events, societal fears, threats, and social media, this show will resonate with modern audiences and prove to be both relevant and accessible.     St. Paul Ballet (SPB) has asked audiences to select the best of five seasons for a multifaceted anniversary celebration at The Cowles Center. From poignant to moving with a bit of charm and verve, SPB takes its cue from audience favorites in classical and contemporary ballet.

    SPB will also reprise the one-act story ballet, Bella Luna by Peter Davison, which is an audience favorite.

    Each show will also have different Audience Choice works that will only be seen at that show, so plan your weekend to take in both performances!

    Forces acting within the Earth, generally unseen by humans, manifest themselves in awesome displays of fiery power. Vulcao is a masterpiece collaboration between choreographer Marciano Silva dos Santos, composer Divanir Antonio Gattamorta, and Contempo’s unified and fiercely athletic cast of dancers. Featuring the company’s dynamic Afro-Brazilian contemporary dance fusion, the work takes inspiration from volcanoes. Also slang in Brazilian Portuguese to describe someone extremely desirable or detested, Vulcao goes beyond nature to reveal parallels found in human personalities and relationships. From shifting tectonic plates to fluid and viscous lava, the work pushes the dancers’ physicality and displays their unyielding vitality.
