Type: Attractions

Two loops. Scenic overlooks and lakes, rocky ridges and areas with large pines. 3 campsites near trails. Small waterfall. Choice of hiking distances from 2 to 6 miles.Also a portage trail for the first 3/4 miles. The trail to the lake has been re-designed so that it is wider, more gentle slope, no tripping hazards, and a firmer surface. Unique geological history described on interpretive sign. Handout available from Forest Service offices.

Directions

  • Directions to Facility / Event: Take Hwy 169 East through Ely. Forest Service office is just out of town on north side of hwy. Continue to County Road 88 a quarter mile past FS office. Turn left on 88 to County Road 116 (Echo Trail). Turn right(north)on 116 to Bass Lake Parking lot

  • Additional Date Information: Superior National Forest/Kawishiwi District Office: open May 1 to Sept. 1, from 7 am to 5:00 pm, Labor Day to Sept. 30 from 8 to 4:30, 7 days a week. Open the rest of the year from 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

  • Additional Rate Information: Information is free. Access to the Superior National Forest outside the Wilderness is free. There are reservation and user fees for permits into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Bass Lake Hiking Trail is outside the Wilderness.
