The Rolling River Music Festival, presented by Sheldon Theatre, takes an Americana turn this year with three remarkable bands that blend country, rock ‘n’ roll, folk and roots: Horseplay, Sam Lewis and Girls Guns and Glory. The ninth annual Festival, set for Saturday, July 15, is a free fun-filled, family-friendly event, offering not just incredible music but an opportunity to relax in historic Red Wing’s Central Park, also known as the community’s living room.
Music begins at 5:00pm with students from Red Wing’s Universal Music Center followed by Horseplay (5:30pm), Sam Lewis (6:45pm) and Girls Guns and Glory (8:30pm). All set times are approximate.
Playing their own original songs, the regional opener Horseplay is a trio based out of Belle Plaine, Minn., who count among their influencers Bob Dylan, Mumford & Sons, Trampled by Turtles and Ryan Adams.
Nashville-based singer-songwriter Sam Lewis was a 2016 tour-mate and stage collaborator of Grammy Award Winner, Chris Stapleton, who dubbed Lewis “a modern Townes Van Zandt.” His latest album, “Waiting On You,” features several generations of Nashville royalty and Nashville’s favorite vocal group, The McCrary Sisters.
Girls Guns and Glory was recently one of Rolling Stone magazine’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know.” Music News Nashville reported, “There’s a lot of buzz about these guys – and with some good reasons. Sometimes, the critics actually do know what they are talking about…” Their hometown paper The Boston Herald described their sound as “Imagine Lyle Lovett and Chris Isaak paying tribute to classic American rock n’ roll from Elvis, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison.”
The Sheldon presents the Rolling River Music Festival in partnership with the Jones Family Foundation and generous local sponsors. For more information, please contact the Sheldon Theatre box office at 1-800-899-5759, or visit their website at
