Why is Sleepy Eye full of history, traditions and pride? Let us tell you!

History: Sleepy Eye has a history unlike anywhere else! Chief Ish-Tak-Ha-Ba, who settled on the north shore of Sleepy Eye Lake, was a peaceful chief who signed the Traverse des Sioux Treaty to keep his people safe. The town built around this lake in 1872 and he is honored with an obelisk monument in the center of town. The Sleepy Eye Flour Mill also played a role in developing this community.

Traditions: Our largest tradition is the Buttered Corn Days Celebration, held each August. Tons of sweet corn donated from Del Monte is handed out to the masses in Allison Park. The annual Sportsmen's Club Ice Fishing Contest is one of the largest in southern Minnesota, creating a little village out on Sleepy Eye Lake. There is also a long tradition of baseball in this community, with many state titles dispersed among the schools and summer leagues.

Pride: Sleepy Eye is proud to have three successful schools, a top-notch medical facility, caring staff at the nursing homes, family-owned businesses, a new aquatic center, the history of the community, the safety to raise a family in a small town, and so much more.
