Type: Attractions

The largest home on St. Paul’s historic Summit Avenue, the elegant Hill House is also a marvel of late-1800s technology.

Best known as the founder of the Great Northern Railway(now the Burlington Northern Santa Fe), James J. Hill was known as “The Empire Builder” for his vast business holdings. Hill’s success was reflected in the grand 42 room mansion he commissioned, which was completed in 1891. At the time, it was the largest private residence in Minnesota, and its mechanical systems – indoor plumbing, central heating, electric and gas lighting – were state of the art. Today, the home is open year-round for tours, art exhibits and special events. Visitors learn about the life and times of Hill, his family and their servants.
