    Grab your paddles and prepare to explore Minnesota’s past! The Sibley House Historic Site and Wilderness Inquiry have partnered to bring you closer to Minnesota’s history than ever before. You’ll explore the importance of the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, and learn how those who lived here shaped Minnesota’s future.

    At the Sibley House Historic Site, you will take a special tour of the historic buildings and learn about the fur trade, the establishment of Minnesota, as well as the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Next, take to the river with Wilderness Inquiry guides who will share with you the environmental, cultural, and historic significance of the junction of two of Minnesota’s mightiest rivers. After the paddle, enjoy snacks and refreshments served on the lawn on the lawn of the Sibley House in Mendota.

    Participants must be a minimum of 6-years-old or at least 30-pounds.

    Henry Hastings Sibley is known as one of Minnesota’s Founding Fathers. He was a national politician, a founder of the Minnesota Territory, leading architect of its constitution and the first governor of Minnesota. Some view Sibley as a cultural leader who bridged Dakota and European American cultures. However, Sibley is also known for his role in controversial treaty negotiations, as well as in battles and trials against the Dakota, the exile of Dakota people, and punitive expeditions against them after the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. This guided experience explores the complicated and controversial life and career of Henry Hastings Sibley.
