The Refuge is located on the Glacial Lake Agassiz beach ridge transition zone. The habitats consist of northern tallgrass prairie, prairie wetlands, maple-basswood forest, oak savannah, and mixed hardwood re-growth. The Refuge Visitor Center is wheelchair-accessible and an extensive 7-mile paved trail system allow for optimum wildlife observation and photography. There is a diverse combination of mammals, raptors, invertebrates, and over 100 species of migratory waterfowl and songbirds.

  • Additional Date Information: Refuge headquarters - open 7:30 am to 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Visitor Center is open year-round, but seasonal hours are subject to change, and are greatly extended during the summer months. Contact Refuge for current hours of operation.

Rydell NWR is located along U.S. Hwy 2, approximately 60 miles east of East Grand Forks, between Erskine and Mentor, MN. From U.S. Hwy 2 turn south on Polk County Rd 210 and follow for approximately 2.5 miles to the Refuge gate.
