Get Cultured at a Live Performance
Summer is a wonderful time to take in some live theater or music in Minnesota, with local theaters staging classic and modern works and musicians playing in the fresh air. Whether you're in the mood for a classic drama, family-friendly play or live music, you're sure to find a performance nearby.
Among August's highlights:
Metro: St. Paul's Circus Juventas presents "Oz" Aug. 1-18. The local performing arts circus school will put an acrobatic twist on the classic tale under the big top. Through Aug. 31, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis presents its adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" starring Vincent Kartheiser -- a Minnesota native best known for his role as Pete Campbell on "Mad Men" -- as Mr. Darcy. And in Bloomington, the feel-good musical "Singin' in the Rain" runs Aug. 16 - Sept. 15 at the Bloomington Theatre and Art Center.
Central: The Crosslake Outdoor Music Series takes place every Saturday night this month in Crosslake Town Square. Local group Decade 7 will play hits from the '70s on Aug. 10, and contemporary country artist Rockie Lynn performs Aug. 24. In Cold Spring, the Great Northern Theatre Company is staging "Guys and Dolls" Aug. 1-9.
South: Though it has little to do with the canned meat that made this town famous, "Monty Python's Spamalot" is coming to Austin Aug. 1-10. The Tony-winning musical comedy is playing at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre at Riverland Community College. On Aug. 8 and 22 in Rochester, the Coda Summer Music Series features free concerts by the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and local musicians on the Historic Riverside Building's east patio.
Northwest: On Aug. 9, the Borderline Philharmonic Concert will highlight baroque, classical and 20th-century pieces at Hoot Owl Resort in Waubun, 30 minutes north of Detroit Lakes. In Park Rapids, The Northern Light Opera Company performs Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" Aug. 1-3 at the Park Rapids High School Auditorium.
Northeast: The Duluth Playhouse wraps up its run of Andrew Lloyd Weber's hit rock opera "Evita" on Aug. 4. On Aug. 5, the Lyric Center for the Arts in Virginia presents its monthly "Words & Lyrics" spoken word event with local author Catherine Holm.
