Photography in Focus
This winter, Minnesota venues present some of the best contemporary and historical photography and provocative takes on artifice and reality.
Cindy Sherman is the subject of a retrospective at Walker Art Center from November 10, 2012 to February 17, 2013. With over 170 photographs from the mid-1970s to the present, the exhibit showcases Sherman as photographer, model, stylist, and creator of images recalling movies and portraiture. Sherman deliberately highlights fiction—using wigs, makeup, and prosthetics that are slightly askew. This large exhibit offers a historic opportunity to see a number of key series from Sherman’s influential career.
Photographs by award-winning Minnesota artists and an internationally-renowned artist are on view through January 6 at Rochester Art Center, a striking contemporary art center in southern Minnesota. The annual McKnight Photography Fellowship exhibit features the latest work by mid-career photographers Peter Happel Christian, Beth Dow, James Henkel, and Colleen Mullins. A concurrent exhibit showcases video and photography by Brazilian artist Cinthia Marcelle.
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts features travel-themed selections from its venerable photography collection in Strangers in a Strange Land. Artists include Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange, Paul Strand, and more. Another exhibit, from the museum’s cutting-edge New Pictures series, presents photographs by Stan Douglas of meticulously restaged historical events.
