It's State Fair Time!
Whether you go for your favorite foods on a stick, the amazing butter sculptures or the adorable baby animals, the 2013 Minnesota State Fair, held Aug. 22 - Sept. 2, won't disappoint. In addition to offering the old standbys, this year's get-together has plenty of new attractions and edibles, including the Arts A'Fair -- pop-up performing arts showcases throughout the grounds -- and treats like breakfast sausage corn dogs and candied bacon cannolis.
The kids will find plenty to keep themselves busy, from Bob's Snake Zoo and Monty's Traveling Reptile Show, to the Alphabet Forest with daily author appearances, to dozens of rides in the Mighty Midway and Kidway. For the grown-ups, the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild sells flights of local beers, experts host demos on gardening and eco-living, and merchants sell everything from handcrafted pottery to goods made out of honey.
Music fans of all kinds will find artists they love playing at the Grandstand; this year's lineup features Sheryl Crow with Dwight Yoakam (Aug. 25), Tim McGraw with Brantley Gilbert (Sept. 2) and "MN Music on a Stick" (Aug. 30), a showcase of local acts including Trampled by Turtles, Mason Jennings and The Suburbs.
It wouldn't be the State Fair without indulging in some one-of-a-kind foods. Mini donuts, cheese curds, french fries, corn dogs and chocolate chip cookies are among the staples, as well as more than 60 things on a stick, from tator tot hot dish to alligator sausage to chocolate-covered key lime pie.
