Winter Getaways a Festive Family Tradition
The winter season is tailor made for festive family get-togethers. Must-see holiday lights shows include the Target Holidazzle Parade in downtown Minneapolis and the Bentleyville Tour of Lights on the Duluth waterfront.
Families can make an arts-centered trip an annual tradition. Classics include How the Grinch Stole Christmas, presented this year at Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis, Willy Wonka at Faribault’s Paradise Center for the Arts, Disney on Ice at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, and The Nutcracker ballet, at various venues including Duluth’s DECC Symphony Hall. Other distinctive concerts and performances feature choral classics, pop tunes, and cultural traditions from Celtic fiddling to flamenco dance.
Another festive custom is to view the special displays at holiday time, from elaborately decorated storefronts in the metro to lights and garlands gracing main streets and mall courtyards. Shopping before and after the holidays offers a great mix of merchandise and frequent promotions.
Half the fun of a winter family getaway is taking advantage of the amenities of a hotel or resort. Splashing in a pool and soaking in hot whirlpool jets is one way to play and get away from it all on a wintery day. Families can take it up a notch by staying at a site with an indoor waterpark featuring exotic décor and water slides, fountains, and tubing streams. Or perhaps after a long day of downhill activities, the gang might want a dip in a steamy outdoor pool.
