Take a Walk with Northfield History Podcasts
History podcasts enable visitors to take a customized walking tour of downtown Northfield featuring rich details about the town's historic sites, events and buildings. Courtesy of the Northfield Historical Society, podcasts can be downloaded to a handheld device, used on a free iPod available from the Society, or viewed online.
The introduction is a mini-history of Northfield's establishment in 1855 and how the town developed its motto: Cows, Colleges, and Contentment. Fifteen other stops focus on particular sites, incorporating stories and historic images reflecting changes in the town's popular culture, events, commerce, and architecture. Lockwood Opera House and Ware Auditorium, for example, trace the wax and wane of opera and film in Northfield over more than 100 years. Sites of important events, including the thwarted Jesse James gang bank robbery of 1876, are highlighted. With the podcasts and accompanying map, users can create their own tour and follow it at their own pace.
