Run with the Dogs

w10dogsled.jpgIf you're crazy about dogs, love the outdoors and are ready for a thrill, sign on for a trip with a sled dog outfitter. For a taste of real adventure, sled dog excursions can serve up a nibble or a whole banquet of excitement.

They are also a great way to take in the winter scenery, since the trips mostly take place in the wilderness forests of northeast Minnesota. The snow-covered landscape and frozen lakes allow the sleds to take you places you couldn't easily get to other times of the year, and some trips venture into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

If you want, there are trips available where you just go along for the ride. But most trips also include instruction in working with the dog team and driving the sled yourself, so it can be an incredible learning experience.

Near Ely, the state's sled dog capital, several outfitters offer guided sled dog trips of varying lengths. Day trips typically include basic instructions in handling the dogs and mushing the team. Multi-day trips are more in-depth and offer more time driving the sled.

There are also dogsled outfitters near Two Harbors, Isabella, Duluth and Deer River, offering trips that range from an hour or two to full-day adventures.
