165-mile State trail running from Grand Rapids to Ely. The Taconite Trail winds through forests and past isolated lakes and streams. Many other trails connect to the Taconite for side trips. Popular for mountain biking, biking, hiking, in-line skating and horseback riding in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. Many areas east of State Highway 53 are too wet for summer use.

  • Additional Date Information: Snowmobiling season is December 1 through March 31. Year to year conditions vary, but best conditions are usually between late December and March 15. Most summer use occurs on the Grand Rapids end.

  • Additional Rate Information: Snowmobiles are required to have registration and trail pass; skiers and horseback riders require a trail pass available where DNR licenses are sold.
