Wilderness & Lakes
Nature has blessed this area with an abundance of woods, waters and wildlife, making it a terrific destination for outdoor enthusiasts. East of International Falls, Voyageurs National Park, primarily comprised of large lakes surrounded by wilderness, is a great place for boating and fishing, as well as adventures by houseboat.
The Superior National Forest has 4 million acres of woods and waters to explore, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which is within its boundaries.
The BWCAW is a premier place for paddling, with Ely and the Gunflint Trail as major access points. Ely is also home to the International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center. The new Chik-Wauk Museum explores the intriguing history of the Gunflint Trail.
Numerous lodges, resorts and campgrounds can be found on lakeshores throughout this area. Lake Vermilion, Crane Lake, and Pelican Lake all are popular fishing waters in a pristine setting. Several smaller lakes can be found in the Chippewa National Forest near Grand Rapids, where Judy Garland’s childhood home is open for tours.
