Mississippi Headwater Lakes

subregion_NW_MissHeadwater.jpgThis is where the mighty Mississippi River begins as a small stream at Lake Itasca. It passes through two big, beautiful lakes: Cass and Winnibogoshish. Two of the state's largest lakes are in this area as well, Red Lake, the biggest within the state, and Leech, Minnesota's third largest lake. In addition to these big lakes, there's an abundance of smaller lakes tucked into these north woods. All of these waters make this a great fishing destination, with lakeside family resorts and campgrounds throughout the area.

Special finds in the area include a sculpture walk and summer theater in Bemidji, several little theaters around Park Rapids, the mile-long beach at Detroit Lakes, interesting shops in Walker, the Paul Bunyan and Heartland bike trails, several scenic golf courses, and a top country music festival.
