Minnesota River Valley
The Minnesota River flows gently between ribbons of oak, elm, maple and cottonwood trees. It wanders past rich farmland and through towns steeped in Minnesota history. Several sites, including the Lower Sioux Agency, tell the story of the Dakota Indians who lived here, the pioneers who settled here, and the tragic conflict between the two communities.
Mankato is home to the Vikings summer training camp, and is an access point to great bike trails. True to its German heritage, the city of New Ulm has a glockenspiel musical clock tower, Schell’s Brewery, German festivals, craft shops and restaurants. A beautiful park with a waterfall is a highlight at Redwood Falls.
Many artists’ studios, a couple of wineries and several fine golf courses are among the fun finds in this quiet countryside. Wildlife areas near the western end of the Minnesota River are prime territory for anglers, hunters and birders.
