Mississippi Bluff Country
One of the most beautiful stretches of the Mississippi flows along the border of southeastern Minnesota, with soaring, wooded bluffs and charming rivertowns along the way. This scenic valley offers plenty to see and do, with antique shops, wineries, apple orchards and golf courses.
Picturesque Red Wing has several specialty shops, and Lake City is on the shores of pretty Lake Pepin. Wabasha is home to the National Eagle Center, where you can learn all about these majestic birds. Winona has become something of an arts town, with the Great River Shakespeare Festival, the Minnesota Beethoven Festival and the Minnesota Maritime Art Museum.
Inland from the Mississippi is Bluff Country, where streams meander through peaceful valleys, as do bike trails that lure visitors to small towns along the way, including Harmony and Lanesboro, home to the Commonweal Theatre. There are many Amish homesteads in the area, and shops carry their quilts, woodwork and other hand-crafted items. Niagara Cave and Mystery Cave tours are other area highlights.
