THE MANKATO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA welcomes The New Standards to Mankato for a very special Valentine’s concert. On February 16, 2019, Minneapolis-based The New Standards joins MSO at the Verizon Event Center. The concert begins at 7:30pm, and is made possible by the generosity of presenting sponsor Gislason & Hunter LLP.

A limited number of patrons will be able to reserve table seating on the floor near the musicians for a unique, up-close musical experience. The concert will also offer staffed cocktail bars and a dance floor for an unforgettable evening - a perfect date for lovebirds and music lovers.

Started in 2005 as an off-shoot project between Minneapolis-based musicians and friends Chan Poling (piano), Steve Roehm (vibes) and John Munson (bass), TNS has grown into a globe-spanning adventure that has charmed and delighted an ever-multiplying legion of faithful fans. TNS plays familiar pop music from every era in a stripped-down acoustic setting, making room for solos and new arrangements with the freedom of jazz, yet never fully abandoning the modest soul of pop and rock.

The three core members of The New Standards all come from illustrious Twin Cities bands. John Munson was an original member the chart-topping Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare. Chan Poling founded the seminal Punk/New Wave band The Suburbs. And Steve Roehm started on drums in the Texas punk outfit Billygoat and the avant-jazz Electropolis.

Under the baton of Music Director Kenneth Freed, MSO’s annual programming offers four full symphonic concerts every year, as well as the beloved Music on the Hill chamber series, free family series, and youth education programs. Founded in 1950, MSO features musicians from the local Mankato area, the Twin Cities, and throughout Minnesota.
