73rd Annual Event Hosted by Otter Tail County, May 7-10, 2020
Mark your calendars for the 2020 Minnesota Governor's Fishing Opener in Otter Tail County, Thursday to Sunday, May 7-10. This will be the first time in the history of the Opener that it will be a county-wide effort in Otter Tail County, with Thumper Pond Resort serving as event headquarters.
Located in west-central Minnesota, Otter Tail offers a classic Minnesota lakeside getaway. It's one of the largest counties in the state at more than 2,200 square miles, made up of 11 percent water, 22 communities and the most lakes (1,048) in any U.S. county, including the largest area lake, Otter Tail Lake. Area lakes are as diverse as the fish that live in them, including walleye, yellow perch, northern pike and sturgeon. Visitors can fish, swim, paddle and boat on this 14,000-acre body of water. Nearby Glendalough State Park and Trail, Maplewood State Park and Inspiration Peak, the highest point in the county, offer additional recreation.
In the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," fishing is a favorite pastime. The Governor's Fishing Opener has been a time-honored Minnesota tradition since 1948 that helps kick off the state's summer travel season. The annual event will spotlight fishing, travel and recreation opportunities in in Otter Tail County and help promote tourism throughout the state.
