Superior Hiking Trail

About

The Superior Hiking Trail is a 300+ mile footpath that follows the rocky ridgeline above Lake Superior from the Wisconsin-Minnesota border to the Canadian border. The Trail is built, maintained, and managed by the Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA), a private nonprofit organization based in Two Harbors, MN.

The Trail can be accessed from over 50 trailheads, including many inside state parks along the North Shore, in the city of Duluth, and along Hwy 61 from west of Two Harbors to north of Grand Marais. The rugged, challenging footpath is great for day hikes, backpacking and thru-hike trips, and trail running. Trail users will enjoy scenic overlooks, waterfalls, boreal forests and wildlife. Along the Trail, you'll find 94 free, shared backcountry campsites spaced every 5-8 miles that are maintained by the SHTA. (Note: there are no SHTA campsites inside the city of Duluth. Several fee campgrounds are located near the Trail in Duluth.)

For more information or to support the Trail, visit SHTA's website, superiorhiking.org, or stop by the Trail Information Center in Two Harbors. (Open April-October, M, TH, F: 10am-4:30pm).

Day Hikes and Trail Running: Numerous loops and out-and-back routes can be enjoyed from over 50 trailheads. Private shuttle services are also available throughout much the year.

Long Distance Hikes: 94 shared backcountry campsites can be enjoyed along the Trail (every 5-8 miles outside of Duluth), water accessible at most spots but must be filtered. No reservations, fees, or permits required -- all campsites must be shared.

Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA): The SHTA Trail Information Center and office is located at 731 7th Avenue, Suite 2 in Two Harbors. Trail maps, the "Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail" book, trail information, and merchandise that supports the Trail are available.
