    In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday. Experience what preparations for a Thanksgiving celebration were like 150 years ago.

    On a 90-minute guided tour, visitors will hike along the wooded trails to the historic Kelley Farm, meet farm animals, and visit the historic house filled with the sights and smells of a harvest celebration.

    Following the tour, pie and refreshments will be served in the visitor center.

    Experience 19th-century preparations for a simple holiday celebration like Oliver Kelley and his family had.

    On this 90-minute guided tour, visitors will walk to the historic Kelley Farm to meet farm animals and explore the historic house. Discover how farm families and their animals coped with the shorter days and colder temperatures, and enjoy snippets of period literature while helping prepare for the upcoming holiday.

    Refreshments and holiday treats from different eras will be served in the visitor center following the tour. Tours begin at 1:30 and 3:30, and last 90 minutes.

  3. Gingerbread Farm

    Spend time with family and friends while building a gingerbread farm in this two-hour workshop. Make a holiday farm scene by building a barn and other structures out of pre-baked gingerbread, use frosting to "glue" the pieces together, then make and decorate gingersnap farm animal cookies to populate your farmyard.

    All materials are supplied. Fee is per gingerbread farm. This program is for families with children ages 6-14. One adult per child under age 10 must attend.

    Experiment making pie crusts using many different ingredients and techniques. Try various fillings and rate the results. Explore fruits, meats, meringues, and puddings in crusts made of chocolate cookies, graham crackers, flour, cheese, or potatoes.

    The Cooking Class series explores various cooking techniques and the flexibility of seasonal ingredients. Participants will cook and sample a variety of dishes from sweet to savory, appetizer to dessert, and will take home printed recipes. Classes are held in the visitor center's Learning Kitchen.

    A minimum of six participants is required to host the cooking class.
