Directions

  • From Elk River, MN take Highway 169 North and take the exit for Sherburne County Road 9. Go west on Co. Rd. 9 four miles to the entrance to the refuge where an information kiosk can be found.

  • Refuge is Open Year round. Refuge Headquarters: Mon-Fri 8am-4pm, Oak Savanna Learning Center: Open for education and appointments only. Trails are open sunrise-sunset daily & the Wildlife Drive is open sunrise-sunset seasonally (mid-April-late- Oct)

  1. 27th Annual Fall Wildlife Festival

    The annual celebration of wildlife, beginning with a 5K run/walk through the refuge. Featuring presentations and booths with live animals, horse drawn wagon rides, nature crafts, bird education, wildlife discovery, Eagle's nest Nature Store, silent auction and food. Small fee for 5K and food. All other activities free.Located at the Oak Savanna Learning Center.
    Additionally, refuge service roads will be open to vehicle traffic on September 26th, with gates opening at 8 am and closing at 3 pm. Maps will be available in September.

    Join us for a fun day of exploring all the wonder that nature provides in the winter season. Snowshoes for children and adults are available to borrow or bring your own. Bonfire, treats and drinks provided by Friends of Sherburne. This event is free and open to the public.

    This event is located at the Oak Savanna Learning Center.

    A variety of spring species can be expected on this hike, along with raptors, waterfowl, and shorebirds. Binoculars are available to borrow. Meet your guide at the Mahnomen Trail on May 9th and the Blue Hill Trail on May 16th.

    This hike is led by members of the Sherburne Photography Club.

    By the middle of October, the refuge hosts thousands of cranes as they roost at night in refuge wetlands, and then fly out to area croplands to forage during the day. Join us for a guided tour of their roosting area on the refuge! Spotting scopes and binoculars available to use.

    Reservations are required and begin September 9th. No reservations will be taken prior to September 9th.
