Once again, the Twin Cities have swept The Trust for Public Land's annual Parkscore rankings. In 2018, Minneapolis earned itself another nod as the nation's No. 1 park system, while St. Paul parks picked up the No. 2 spot. For anyone who has spent time in the Twin Cities, the news comes as no surprise. Spending time outdoors is what visiting Minneapolis and St. Paul is all about.
One of the hardest things about planning your first Boundary Waters trip is deciding where to go within the vast preserve’s 1,200 miles of canoe routes, 11 hiking trails and approximately 2,000 designated campsites. This four-day itinerary highlights some of the best sights and camping spots along a moderate course, and ends with a hearty dose of small town Minnesota on the final day—a complete “Up North” experience if there ever was one.
If you’re planning a trip to Otter Tail County and happen to call their visitors bureau in the process, the specially made jingle you’ll hear on the other end nicely sums up what you should expect during a long weekend there: a warm, sometimes quirky, quintessential small-town Minnesota experience.
Northwest Minnesota is where the iconic Great Plains prairie meets the uniquely Upper Midwestern north woods. In the summer, you’ll find serene scenes of kids jumping off rope swings into crystal lakes, while secluded and scenic snowmobile trails take over come winter. If a little R&R is what you’re after, camping in this region is just what the doctor ordered. From private campgrounds to state parks, there are tons of options for every type of camper. All you have to do is pack up your car (or your RV) and go!
From east to west, southern Minnesota is home to some of the state’s most whimsical, charming boutique shopping destinations. Spend a day at any of these southern Minnesota shops perusing their wares and you’ll agree it’s some of the best shopping in the state. The only problem? Figuring out how to get so many incredible finds back to your home.
