Where to Turn up the Romance When the Temps Get Frosty

By Katie Dohman

The most romantic place isn’t always a beach with an umbrella drink in hand and flowers in your hair. Sometimes it’s a quiet, cozy, firelit retreat, with snow drifting silently outside. Instead of concentrating on everything there is to do in the world, it’s closely examining the world directly before you. Here are a few places that will help you get back in touch with nature—and your partner.

Two  Harbors

Larsmont Cottages winter Two Harbors

When it comes to cozy winter scenes, Larsmont Cottages on Lake Superior could hardly draw up a better one: How can you resist the thought of feeding each other gooey fireside s’mores—especially after a snowshoe session? Larsmont also offers an irresistibly classic romance package: It includes a discount on massages, votive candles, champagne, scattered rose petals, chocolate and a whirlpool tub. Intrigued? Thought so. And don’t miss the steamy sauna, either.

More North Shore options:

Take your pick of lodging at the Arrowwood Resort—cottage, townhome or lodge room—and enjoy the array of amenities that make Arrowwood an ideal wintertime getaway. You and your partner love the outdoors? Hold hands while ice skating or sledding, or in a horse-drawn carriage.

Want to hole up together? Darling Reflections Spa will help get you relaxed. A 38,000-square-foot waterpark might trick your mind into thinking you’re summering again, or hit up the tennis court to work up a sweat. Make sure to ask about the tantalizing specialty packages, which include date nights, spa deals and winter adventures.

Heart-of-the-state romance:

White Wilderness yurt in ElyFor a couple who loves adventure: Abandon the hotel in favor of a yurt. Don’t worry: Those hosted by White Wilderness in Ely are insulated, heated and on a carpeted platform. Spend the day mushing through the frosty forest with your pack of dogs, then arrive at your yurt to bed down for the night.

Snowshoe to your heart’s content. Help with the dogs. Bundle up—happy and exhausted—together.

Other northern retreats:

You can’t deny the romance emanating from a small town that calls itself “the-bed and-breakfast capital of the world.” That means you can take your pick of cozy B&Bs in Lanesboro, but many flock to the Scanlan House for its Victorian charm and abundance of romantic add-ons. Consider sinking into a steamy aromatherapeutic drawn bath and turn-down service, complete with chocolates on the pillow. Or maybe a massage is more your style; there’s a package that includes wine and a gift certificate to dinner.

If you feel the need to leave, there’s always a horse-drawn carriage ride with a stop at a cabin to warm up.
