    The 2nd annual Iron Range Pasty Festival will begin at 3pm, with pasties - traditional meat pies featuring beef, pork, potatoes, carrots, rutabagas and onions wrapped in a flaky crust and eaten plain or with accoutrement such as gravy, butter or catsup - served and family activities 3-6pm (scavenger hunt, rutabaga bowling, Mrs. Rutabaga Head contest, s'mores by the fire & music). At 6pm the beer tent opens, still serving pasty meals till 7, 6:30 presentation fundraiser for local food activities through Iron Range Partnership for Sustainability. Dine in or take out!

    The Sons of the Pioneers is known as the original “singing cowboy” band, and instrumental in creating the earliest sounds of western music.

    Founded by Roy Rogers in 1934, the band has remained together continuously since then, rotating a total of 46 members over the years and currently featuring Roy’s son Dusty.

    This legendary band continues to gain fans young and old playing favorites like Cool Water, Cimarron, Tumbling Tumbleweeds and of course Happy Trails.

    With an extraordinarily broad vocal range and natural fluency in many musical styles, countertenor Terry Barber has been featured on some of the world’s most storied stages, and has worked with many of the music industry’s leading figures including Chanticleer, Madonna, Jewel and Steve Smith to name a few.

    His program, “Around the World in 80 Minutes”, features unique arrangements by Emmy and Grammy-winning composers of some of the world’s favorite melodies both classical and popular. This served as the inspiration for a character of the same name in the W.P. Kinsella novel “Shoeless Joe,” which became the major motion picture “Field of Dreams” starring Kevin Costner, where Doc was portrayed by Burt Lancaster.     This is a one day "shakedown" run only open to past customers. We will not be running a class...rather, it will be a chance to make sure everything is working properly and ready to go for the season. The day will include checking First Aid kits, testing and respooling winches, topping off fluids, pre-running a few select trails (making sure the ice and snow did not increase the difficulty level too much), etc.

    This shakedown may be rescheduled depending on spring thaw conditions

    Often, when traversing the Sax-Zim Bog, tracks are encountered. But how do you know if you are looking at dog vs wolf tracks? What is the difference between a hole made by a Downy Woodpecker and a Black-backed Woodpecker? We will investigate the activity by critters in the Sax-Zim Bog through an investigation of the area around the Welcome Center.

    Warbler Wednesdays are a fixture for summer birding, but we don’t have a counterpart to winter birding… until now! Join us for a few winter birding field trips. The intention of these field trips is to give you an introduction on how to approach birding in the Sax-Zim Bog in the winter months. We will not be targeting owls, but will take a look at any we come across. This is a good field trip series for you to learn how to approach winter birding in the Sax-Zim Bog.

  33. Winter World of Lichens Field Trip

    Northern Minnesota is home to a diverse lichen community. These species cover nearly 8% of the terrestrial surface of the earth, yet are relatively unknown to most of us. Join us on this trip to get firsthand experience in lichen identification, as well as to learn a few of the more common lichens in our area. During the trip, we will be making small collections of lichens for the Welcome Center or personal use! We MAY utilize snowshoes for this Field Trip (Limited availability, please RSVP if snowshoes are needed.

    We are looking forward to this year’s festival. It will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020 from 10am-4pm. As always, the festival is free for everyone, but donations are welcome.

    As per tradition, we have many crafters and artisans that will be demonstrating and selling their wares. Local authors will be there for book signings. Musicians will be performing.

    Strawberry Fields will again be joining us to provide carriage and guided horse rides. We will have several baby farm animals for the children to play with and hold.

    Fresh produce will be available for purchase as well as various other lunch options.
