ABOUT THE FILM

Frida Kahlo is one of the world’s most famous artists and an icon of feminism and resilience. But how was her childhood? When did she first become interested in art, what was her inspiration for the images that would later become a fundamental part of her creative signature? Hola Frida adapted from the book Frida, c’est moi by Sophie Faucher (text) and Cara Carmina (illustrations), plunges us into the lively streets of Coyoacán, Mexico where a curious, mischievous young Frida enjoys an exhilarating childhood, filling her first notebooks with pages of colorful drawings and ideas. She plays with her sister, befriends a neighborhood dog, climbs trees, and runs around full of energy and plans for the future. But one day, her life changes with a sudden illness and she learns to cope with physical and emotional challenges through the mighty power of imagination, her inventive mind and her art.

Karine Vézina and André Kadi, the directors and animators of this ode to ingenuity and inner strength, created a world that is both dreamlike and profoundly authentic. An inspiring story for all ages with a wealth of references to Frida’s future artistic career and her unique body of work. This gorgeously animated tale is a rare opportunity to discover or rediscover Frida Kahlo, in an enriching, inspiring and moving experience for the whole family.
