ABOUT THE FILM

Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. Hoping to reunite with his son, he travels to Recife during Carnival but soon he realizes that the city is not the safe haven he was expecting. In a hostile environment, Marcelo is forced to live undercover after receiving threats from a powerful businessman. The danger that surrounds him finds a loving respite in his relationship with his son, whom he had left in the care of his grandparents. But his life is marked by the constant risk of not knowing if he will see him again. Their only way out is trying to leave the country.

Wagner Moura's Cannes Award-winning performance as Marcelo, portrays a man torn between his past and his complicated clandestine life, while trying to reconnect with his roots. With a narrative that changes its genre, moving from political thriller to black comedy, from B-horror movie to an existential drama, A Secret Agent offers an impactful account of the history of Brazil. Kleber Mendonça Filho, winner of the Best Director Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, brilliantly plays with genres and a wealth of cinematic references, bringing them together with the harshness of reality, in a profound journey into the open wounds of a country that still is finding ways to face its own pain.

Brasil, 1977. Marcelo, um especialista em tecnologia com pouco mais de 40 anos, está em fuga. Na esperança de se reencontrar com o filho, ele viaja para Recife durante o Carnaval, mas logo percebe que a cidade não é o refúgio seguro que esperava. Em um ambiente hostil, Marcelo é forçado a viver na clandestinidade após receber ameaças de um empresário poderoso. O perigo que o cerca encontra um alívio em sua relação afetiva com o filho, que ele havia deixado sob os cuidados dos avós. Mas sua vida é marcada pelo risco constante de não saber se voltará a vê-lo. A única saída deles é tentar deixar o país. A atuação premiada de Wagner Moura em Cannes como Marcelo retrata um homem dividido entre seu passado e sua complicada vida clandestina, enquanto tenta se reconectar com suas raízes.
