About
Thursday evening, October 3rd the History Center of Olmsted County is extremely lucky to host Susan Bartlett Foote, author of The Crusade For Forgotten Souls, for our Gather 'Round lecture series. In 1866, the MN State Legislature established the first Minnesota Hospital for the Insane in St. Peter, the Minnesota Inebriate Asylum (later known as the Rochester State Hospital) followed in 1879. In total, there were eleven state psychiatric hospitals opened in Minnesota. The deplorable conditions and treatment at these hospitals was exposed in the 1940s as a crusade to save the lost souls contained within them began. Don't miss your opportunity to learn about the fascinating history of the hospitals and the reform movement that followed.
