ABOUT THE FILM

In the West Bank, in 1988, a Palestinian teenager eagerly joins local protests against the Israeli occupation, which quickly becomes violent. However, before we learn his fate, his mother turns to the camera to tell his story, one that traces the experiences of an uprooted Palestinian family, beginning with the Nakba, when Zionist paramilitary troops expelled more than 700,000 Palestinian Arabs from their homes. This epic chronicle depicts a family’s struggle to remain together and preserve its dignity. The film uses history to tackle issues not often covered in Palestinian cinema, like the intergenerational impacts of violence, trauma, and humiliation as well as the feelings of guilt associated with survival. It also insists on the importance of storytelling as a form of resistance, a way of not only having one’s voice and experiences heard, but also as a powerful tool of survival.
