As part of the upcoming Semiquincentennial (250th) anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, we are offering an "America 250 Genealogy" series to help you uncover your family's history. The series can be taken as a whole, or in individual sections. We will focus on different aspects of genealogy research and provide workshops where you can visit the museum to get help when and where needed. This series is in partnership with the Dakota County Historical Society, the Minnesota Genealogical Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

During the American Revolutionary War, approximately 35% of the population of the Thirteen Colonies was loyal to King George III of Great Britain. Was your ancestor one of them? How do you know if your ancestor was a Loyalist? In this presentation, learn what to look for in documents and records to determine if your ancestor meets the qualifications of being a Loyalist.

Hailing from Southwestern Ontario, Kathryn Lake Hogan is a professional genealogist, educator, and speaker specializing in Canadian family history. She’s the founder of Looking4Ancestors and is known for making genealogy approachable, engaging, and, dare we say, fun! Kathryn teaches on a variety of topics, including Loyalist ancestry, immigration, and migration patterns. She has presented for major organizations such as RootsTech, Legacy Family Tree Webinars, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), and the GRIP Genealogy Institute. Her articles have been featured in Family Tree Magazine and the APG Quarterly. She’s held leadership roles with Ontario Ancestors and the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada. When she’s not researching or teaching, you might find her in the gym as a beginner powerlifter.
