About
As part of the upcoming Semiquincentennial (250th) anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, we are offering an "America 250 Genealogy" series to help you uncover your family's history. The series can be taken as a whole, or in individual sections. We will focus on different aspects of genealogy research and provide workshops where you can visit the museum to get help when and where needed. This series is in partnership with the Dakota County Historical Society, the Minnesota Genealogical Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The federal government began awarding pensions to veterans of the American Revolution and their widows or minor dependents who met eligibility conditions in the 1790s. Pensions were also granted to veterans of later wars. The application files for these pensions often include name, rank, military unit, period of service, residence, place of birth, marriage, and death, and nature of disability or need. Learn where to find and how to use these resources to learn more about your ancestors during the era of the American Revolution.
Lois Abromitis Mackin, Ph.D., is a professional genealogist focusing on British Isles and American research. Lois has been teaching and writing about genealogical records and methods since 2010. She is based in the Twin Cities.
