About
Hike by candlelight at Lac qui Parle State Park on January 3rd.
Minnesota state parks and trails will host candlelight events across the state this winter, including one at Lac qui Parle State Park on Saturday, January 3rd, 2026. Drop by any time between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm for hiking as stars twinkle overhead and candles flicker in the snow.
"Winter candlelight events are a magical way to experience Minnesota's state parks and trails," said Ann Pierce, director of Parks and Trails at the Minnesota DNR. "There's something truly special about walking a snowy trail under the glow of candlelight, where the quiet of the night and the sparkle of the snow create a peaceful escape. It's a chance to slow down, connect with nature, spend time with friends and family and find beauty in the stillness of winter."
The .8-mile trail starts at Group Camp 2 and ends at the historic warming shelter and is suitable for beginner-level hikers of all ages.
The evening wraps up with a cup of hot cocoa near a crackling bonfire.
Save time: Get vehicle permits and ski passes online before you go
A vehicle permit is required to enter Minnesota state parks and recreation areas. The DNR recommends buying permits in advance at the state park vehicle permit website (mndnr.gov/permit). Permits are also available at the park before the event (M-F 8-4). The cost is $7 per day, or $35 for a year-round permit.
In the event of severe weather, check alerts and notices on the Lac qui Parle State Park website | Minnesota DNR
