There are many things, such as Christmas trees and decorations, that remind us of the holiday season. Many of us share common holiday traditions such as gift giving or putting up outdoor lights, but have you ever wondered where our Christmas traditions started? Christmas has a remarkable history—not all of which you may expect! In fact, there were several times in history when Christmas was unpopular and looked very different from the Christmas we celebrate today.

Join Shannon Gibney for a creative writing workshop in conversation with the Girlhood (It’s complicated) exhibit. In this hands-on class, participants will draw inspiration from the themes of the exhibit to reflect on their own experiences and discover the stories yet to be told.

Girlhood (It's complicated) Book Club: The Girl in Building C

The Minnesota History Center is hosting Girlhood (It’s complicated), an exhibit created by the National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. Featuring interactive displays, media components, and over 100 objects from the Smithsonian collection, this powerful exhibit explores how young women have continuously influenced politics, education, work, health, and fashion.

Free Spring Cleaning Day on the Farm

Help us turn the farm upside down! It's spring cleaning day at the Oliver Kelley Farm. Lend a hand tidying up in the historic house and learn how farmers got their gardens and fields in order for the busy planting season ahead. All guests enter for free!

Frances Anne Hopkins: Hudson Bay Company Wife, Voyageur’s Artist at Sibley

Frances Anne Hopkins paintings of canoe travel are best described as colorful and accurate scenes of early fur trade history. These cherished prints are widely published and reproduced. However, most admirers of Hopkins work do not know the artist was a woman or that she was from a prominent British family and mother of seven! Join historian Mary Ellen Weller-Smith as she shares the story of Frances Anne Hopkins and her remarkable life as a voyageur’s wife.

Easter Egg Hunt

Put on your best Easter attire and hop over to the James J. Hill House!

The annual Easter Egg Hunt will be offered in 3 sessions:

  • 9:30 - 11:00 am
  • noon - 1:00 pm
  • 2:30 - 4 pm

Enjoy family-friendly hands-on activities, a monarch butterfly scavenger hunt, story time, and self-guided access to the first floor and basement of the house during this festive event!

No guided house tours are offered this day. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
