History Theatre is a three-time IVEY Award-winning theater, and is recognized nationally as a leader in producing historical work. For more than 35 years History Theatre has produced brave, entertaining explorations of all the histories that make up our diverse community. Each year History Theatre produces a season filled with excellent plays and musicals while developing new scripts through workshops and staged readings.
Built in 1887, this beautifully restored building houses one of the country's best small history museums. Located in Otter Tail County, home to 1000 of Minnesota's fabled sky blue lakes, the Museum features photographic essays, interpretive exhibits and original motion pictures from the early part of the century as well as an innovative research facility. Interpretive exhibits detailing history of Olmsted County ranging from Prehistoric, Paleo, Native American, to Early Rochester, and the Mayo Clinic; research library and archives containing over 600,000 maps, photographs, diaries, journals, and books relating primarily to Olmsted County and southeastern Minnesota. Each year the History Center of Olmsted County, together with its enthusiastic volunteers, provides presentations, educational and outreach programs, special events, museum exhibits, and more.
The History Center houses artifacts dating from the 1870s when Luverne, the county seat, developed into an agri-business center. A variety of displays are available including the largest collection of nutcrackers in the Midwest. The newly renovated History Center is also a source for genealogy help with over 8,000 obituaries from Rock County
The museum housed inside the Hjemkomst Center interprets the Viking ship replica Hjemkomst & its historic 1982 voyage to Norway. See an exhibit around the ship and a 12-min.video on the building and sailing of the ship. Outside the replica of the Hopperstad Norwegian Stave Church dating back to the 1100s set in beautiful Viking Park beside the Red River of the North is open only with a tour guide at the top of each hour the museum is open. The Church is closed Jan-March. In two lower floors are changing history and art exhibits.

Since the re-opening in 1991, the State has hosted live Broadway touring productions such as Avenue Q, Sweeney Todd and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, concerts featuring Patti Smith and Gordon Lightfoot, author and adventure speaker series and films including the world premiere of the Minnesota-based movie, "Grumpy Old Men." Hennepin Theatre Trust is now the owner and operator of this magnificent structure.

The Historic Paramount Theatre, located in downtown Austin, opened as a first run movie theatre in 1929. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is an atmospheric theatre with a Spanish motif, one of four atmospheric theatres left in Minnesota. Today it is used as a performing arts center featuring music, plays, dance, and concerts.
