Northfield Historical Society

Northfield Historical Society’s Bank Museum is the site of the infamous James-Younger Bank Raid, an event historians agree was the beginning of the end of Jesse James’ storied outlaw career. The fully restored bank sits in the center of Northfield’s handsome, historic district that surrounds the community square and overlooks the picturesque Cannon River. Our permanent exhibit, which includes the restored bank interior, brings the bank raid to life.

We have the only boat launch on the lake, which we restrict to our guests only. There is no public access to Mitchell Lake.

Northern Tallgrass Prairie NWR

The Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge is approximately 4392 acres in size. It was established to provide a means to permanently preserve a portion of northern tallgrass prairie in western Minnesota and northwestern Iowa. Refuge lands provide visitors the opportunity to view waterfowl, songbirds, marsh and wading birds, shorebirds, raptors, and upland game birds. Other animals to watch for include white-tailed deer, red fox, ground squirrels, and coyotes.
