Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge

61,500 acres in the Aspen Parkland Area, 38,000 are wetland. A Globally Important Bird Area with 298 bird species recorded. Bird-watching best during spring and fall migrations. Moose, wolves, river otter and fisher are unique. One of the 50 best places in U.S. to observe a diversity of birds and mammals and one of 100 best places in N. America to observe birds. View wildlife from Lost Bay Habitat Drive, Headquarters, Maakstad and Rodahl Hiking Trails, 290 St. NE and adjacent township roads.

Agassiz Environmental Learning Center

Unique 640 acres Fertile Sand Hills natural area features sand dunes, prairie oak savanna, riverine communities and abundant wildflowers. Outdoor programs offered. Ten miles of self-guided recreation trails for walking or horseback riding. Maps available. No motor vehicles allowed. Displays at Nature Center Building. Also 6 primitive campsites available.

Agassiz Dunes SNA

At its maximum, the glacial Lake Agassiz was larger in surface area than all the present-day Great Lakes combined. Glacial Lake Agassiz began draining roughly 8,500 years ago, leaving a scattering of relic lakes and distinctive landforms. The story of this vast lake continues to unfold at Agassiz Dunes SNA.

Agassiz Audubon Center

The Agassiz Audubon Center, the Agassiz Valley Water Resources Management Project and NW Minnesota Pollinator Garden provide nearly 5 square miles of habitat with a variety of constructed wetlands. It's a great place to spot (and photograph) wildlife - including American White Pelicans, Bald and Golden Eagles, falcons, waterfowl, cranes and shorebirds, warblers and flycatchers, Snowy Owls and other charismatic wildlife. While there is always something amazing to see, we have good reason to brag about our winter species. Snowy Owls are consistent regulars.

Afton State Park

Afton State Park's rugged, rolling landscape provides excellent hiking, horseback riding and skiing opportunities, plus a swimming beach and spectacular scenic overlooks of the St. Croix River. The Prairie Walk interpretive trail, oak savannas and wooded river valley offer an interesting contrast of wildlife habitats and exceptional birdwatching. The visitor center is a good place to get oriented to the park's trails and special features.

Afton House Inn

Located on the Scenic St. Croix River in picturesque downtown Afton. The Historic Afton House Inn is Minnesota's oldest Inn dating back to 1867 and as such holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places. The inn is trimmed with country, antique, and Victorian decor. Luxurious and romantic rooms include a gas fireplace and jacuzzi. Afton Area Business Association

The historic village of Afton is nestled between wooded river bluffs and a protected scenic river, the lovely St. Croix. Some call Afton "nostalgic, friendly, and quaintly charming." Visitors in the mid-1800s were reminded of Robert Burns' poem "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton," and thence came it's name. The picturesque village of Afton has shopping, an old fashion ice cream shop, lodging, dining, wine shop, clothing shop, salons, and much more.

Afton Apple Orchard

Drive out to Afton Apple Orchard for a pleasant, interesting and healthful way for you and your family to enjoy a day in the country. Pick-your-own strawberries in June-July (pre-picked fruit available), pick-your-own apples, fall raspberries and pumpkins mid August thru October. Hayrides, playground, Johnny Combine, petting farm, straw mountain, hayrides, 15-acre corn maze (mid Sept-Oct) and other family fun in the summer or fall. Many apple time favorites available at our concessions.
