Where to Stop When Biking the Gitchi-Gami State Trail

By Aaron Shaffer

One of the best ways to see Minnesota’s picturesque North Shore is by bike — the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, specifically. A grand tour of the area's top attractions, it offers classic Lake Superior views you can’t get any other way, such as the Split Rock Lighthouse

With 34 of its 90 miles completed as of 2025, the trail is still a work in progress. Once it's complete, the Gitchi-Gami will connect Two Harbors — a town about 20 miles northeast of Duluth — with Grand Marais

For now, you’ll likely ride trail segments, including small pieces near Two Harbors (just under a mile) and Silver Creek Cliff (1 mile), and larger pieces between Gooseberry Falls and Silver Bay (17.6 miles), Schroeder and Lutsen (12.5 miles), and Cut Face Creek and Grand Marais (5.1 miles).

Here are some essential stops along each segment.

Just southwest of this short, nearly one-mile segment is Castle Danger Brewery. Sit outside with one of its stellar cream ales and order pizza straight to your table from nearby Northshore Pizza Cafe or Do North Pizzeria

Consider also stopping at a newer establishment, The Tipsy Mosquito, for craft cocktails or food.

For most riders, this one-mile segment can only comfortably be reached by car, so plan on adding this into an existing itinerary. Hop out and ride or walk to reach a massive overlook (more than 3,000 feet of views) and sweeping vistas overlooking Lake Superior.

Gooseberry Falls to Silver Bay

Gooseberry Falls to Silver Bay is a classic out-and-back route for cyclists along the North Shore. The total out-and-back mileage is 35 miles, and includes quite a few ups and downs, with scenic views from the trail of the Split Rock Lighthouse.

Gooseberry Falls State Park is a must-stop off of Highway 61. Its multi-layered waterfall and scenic overlooks are so popular the visitor’s center doubles as a rest area. If you want to escape the crowds, consider wandering along the meandering paths that link with the Superior Hiking Trail or head toward Lake Superior.

You’ll see the Split Rock Lighthouse from the trail as you approach from the south — a unique view amongst the hills and trees. You can continue on at that point, or consider stopping to visit the historic and picturesque landmark and/or have a picnic lunch next to Lake Superior.

See the actual split rock on this nearly 5-mile hiking stop (plan for 2-3 hours), which is part of the Superior Hiking Trail. Keep an eye out for the ridge as you near the turnaround. Note that due to trail damage the east side of what used to be a loop has been closed for some time, so this would likely be an out-and-back hike.

Beaver Bay is near the end of the trail, and home to several potential stops, including Red Raven North Bike Shop, Green Door bar and restaurant, The Big Dipper ice cream shop, and for some electrolytes or snacks — the Circle K gas station. You’ll also find a beautiful new rest area at the intersection of Lax Lake Road and the Beaver River.

If you’re planning to ride with kids or novice riders, make sure to plan for a short gap in this trail section. If you’re comfortable riding it or splitting it into smaller sections, you’ll be rewarded with access to views of the Temperance River gorge and Lutsen Mountains.

Schroeder to Lutsen

This 12.5-mile segment (including a .3 mile gap in Tofte) of the Gitchi-Gami Trail passes directly over the Temperance River, which is close to state park sights like the Hidden Falls gorge. If you need to stretch your legs, you’ll see an intersection with the Superior Hiking Trail, which parallels the river.

Take a slight detour at the end of your ride and the gondola at Lutsen Mountains up to its Summit Cafeteria for great views of the surrounding hills and ski runs, as well as Lake Superior. Make sure to check hours if you’re stopping, as summer is their off season.

Cut Face Creek Wayside to Grand Marais

Riding into Grand Marais is a destination cyclist’s dream, even if it’s only a short, 5.1-mile segment.

The Fisherman’s Daughter at Dockside Fish Market is a must-stop for fresh fish caught on Lake Superior. Expect a wait if you’re there at a popular time; it’s worth it.

Voyageur Brewing Company is straight across the street, offering delicious brews and outdoor seating less than a block off the trail.

After the trail ends at 1st Avenue, wander toward Artist’s Point, where you’ll see gorgeous views of Lake Superior from this rocky peninsula. Walking (or biking) there, you’ll pass by local favorites like Sydney’s Frozen Custard, World’s Best Donuts, and Lake Superior Trading Post
