Mille Lacs Moraine SNA

About

Steep, forested slopes, small lakes and wetlands characterize the landscape of this 318-acre site. The topography reflects the most recent glacial era, roughly 15,000 years before present, when an advancing glacier stalled, then retreated, depositing rock and debris as a moraine along its melting edge. Within the SNA, this moraine explains the abrupt, 160' rise in elevation to the west and south of Sunfish Lake.

Those who venture here will be rewarded by the diverse understory, with hepatica, bloodroot, and marsh marigold following on the heels of the snow, soon followed by jack-in-the-pulpit and clusters of pale green blue-bead lily rising from the moist soil as the canopy closes above.

This site has no maintained trails or other recreational facilities. This site is in an Audubon Important Bird Area.
