The 29-mile Schoolcraft Trail connects the community of Lake George to the Paul Bunyan State Forest. The rough, hilly terrain dotted with bogs and ponds showcase the diverse Minnesota landscape. The trail is a combination of forest and township roads as well as county and state road rights-of-way.
The park is named after Henry Schoolcraft, who was guided by the Anishinabe, to the source of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca. The Mississippi River is a little wider as it flows through the park, but this is a much quieter spot than the busy Headwaters. Hikers, campers, and canoeists enjoy a nice view of the river from the park.
